Current Working Groups & Interest Groups

(as of Jan 2022)

Operational Groups

These groups provide coordinating and/or administrative support for CaRCC activities, including other groups.

Logistics Team: This operational group develops, coordinates, distributes, and supports the infrastructure of people and resources (email lists, Google Docs, calendars) that enable various CaRCC efforts. If you have questions about CaRCC or would like to learn more, e-mail us at help@carcc.org.

Engagement: A team of individuals working to increase the visibility of  and participation in CaRCC’s s community-driven activities, especially to organizations and individuals that are underrepresented.

People Network Track Coordinators: This operational group aims to foster, build and grow the inclusive CaRCC community (termed the “People Network”) of campus CI, research computing and data professionals. Each of several, focused discussion tracks within the Network has monthly virtual sessions and are coordinated by volunteers.

Interest Groups

These CaRCC (discussion) groups are organized around common interests, which may motivate evolution to a working group with specific objectives.

Decadal Survey: The Decadal Survey interest group aims to develop a decadal survey (akin to what has been done in astronomy and other fields) for research computing and data to distribute to the broader community and potentially guide joint efforts.

Staff and Student Workforce Development: The Combined Staff and Student Workforce Development interest group is working to develop resources to  support individuals and institutions in the implementation of staff and student workforce development programs.

Working Groups

These CaRCC groups have an established membership, clear objectives, and timelines for outcomes and products.

EPSCoR CI Workshop: This working group will host a workshop to reduce the CI capabilities knowledge gap across EPSCoR jurisdictions, and address a recent “Call to Action” to increase CI access across EPSCoR. We will accomplish our goals by employing the RCD Capabilities Model assessment tool, paired with training and workshop activities designed to inspire ideas around CI access, planning, and partnerships.

Research Computing and Data Capabilities Model: allows institutions to assess their support for computationally- and data-intensive research, to identify potential areas for improvement, and to understand how the broader community views Research Computing and Data support.

RCD Career Arcs: This group is creating resources for Research Computing and Data (RCD) Professionals to explain RCD career options and help existing RCD professionals explore professional development and advancement. These resources will also aid in recruiting a larger and more diverse pipeline into the RCD profession.

RCD Professionalization: This working group will further disseminate and develop new frameworks and approaches to guide conversations between Human Resources leaders and Research Computing and Data leaders around attracting, retaining, diversifying, and developing research computing and data and cyberinfrastructure talent.
