Title: Teaching Research Data Management(RDM) to Students
Presenter(s): O’Donnell, Megan N [LIB],Llebot Lorente, Clara; Dessislava Kirilova, Venice Bayrd
Description: Research Data Management (RDM) skills have become more and more important as funding agencies have increased scrutiny on data management plans and begun nudging FAIR guidelines and other best practices. However, RDM skills training may not be an integrated part of many graduate research curriculums. Panelists from the CaRCC community will participate in  a facilitated discussion highlighting their experiences teaching RDM. Topics will include:

  • What kinds of successful instruction formats and strategies have you used in teaching graduate students about research data management?
  • What has been the biggest challenge you have dealt with in relation to training and teaching RDM?
  • How do you address the IT component of data management? E.G. policies, security, storage, access, movement, backup.
  • What are some of the data curation decision points that impact/intersect with Research IT resources, either in the data management planning process, or elsewhere in the research data lifecycle?
  • How do data repositories, and data set curation, impact graduate students?
  • How do you assess the impact of RDM instruction and guidance on grad students this impact?
  • How can/do libraries work with domain repositories?
