May CaRCC People Network & RCD Community Calls

Mark your calendars for these upcoming People Network calls (Zoom details at the end). For handy calendar entries, try the CaRCC Events Calendar. We also highlight other calls from our RCD Ecosystem partners and collaborators, as these events touch many, if not all, in our community.

This month, we’d like to bring to your attention a joint set of calls between the US Research Software Engineer Association (US-RSE) and CaRCC. Hosted by each group, the calls give you, the community, an opportunity to discuss topics related to RSEs in the workforce. We hope to see you then and there.

If you’re not on our mailing lists, please fill out our Join the People Network form and join our Slack channels.

CaRCC People Network Calls:

Data-Facing Track (first Tuesdays)
Background and Demonstration of the Open Research Toolkit, an OER for Learning about the Open Research Ecosystem, discussion facilitated by Christopher Eaker
Tue May 3, 1p ET/ 12p CT/ 11a MT/ 10a PT/ 7a HT

In this presentation, the presenter will describe the reasoning behind the creation of the Open Research Toolkit (ORT), explain the methodology of its creation, and showcase the modules on the Open Science Framework. The presenter hopes for an engaged discussion from the track about the ORT and the modules.  Any  feedback on the current modules and ideas for future modules particularly from a HPC perspective are welcome as well as collaborators.

The May Emerging Centers Track call will feature the founders of a new track focused on a topic close to all of our hearts: Strategy and Policy Development! Patrick Schmitz and Doug Jennewein will join us to discuss the development of the track and the first set of strategy and policy development areas that will be addressed. We will also discuss gathering topics for the new calls moving forward.

Systems-Facing Track (third Thursdays)
Operating a research computing environment for a large university, discussion facilitated by:
Deumens Erik, Senior Director, UFIT Research Computing
Jones Brennan, Systems administrator, UFIT Research Computing
Prescott Craig, Systems Architect, UFIT Research Computing
Tomeo Eric, Operations Manager, UFIT Research Computing
Thu May 19, 12p ET/ 11a CT/ 10a MT/ 9a PT/ 6a HT

The University of Florida (UF) has been building a research computing environment for its faculty and their students and collaborators for a decade. Starting from a very distributed environment, the university has built a research computing infrastructure to serve the needs of the community. This has advantages of scale and consistency, but because of the diversity of needs and requirements, the resulting infrastructure is also complex, albeit more manageable by a small team than the original network of distributed resources. The discussion will address some of the architectural designs and policies and procedures that have been put in place to operate the system. The goal has been to enable the research and teaching mission while maintaining security of the system, the data, and the users.

Joint US-RSE / CaRCC Conversations

The US Research Software Engineers Association and CaRCC is teaming up for a two-part conversation on research software engineers in the workforce:

Conversation on RSEs in the Workforce, part 1
A discussion hosted by the US-RSE
Thu May 12, 12p ET/ 11a CT/ 10a MT/ 9a PT/ 6a HT

The first of this two-part conversation will be held during the usual US-RSE call time slot. Assisted by leaders of the CaRCC People Network Tracks, this call will focus on two of four questions around RSEs in the workforce: creating positions, attracting talent, and creating a career arc.

Conversation on RSEs in the Workforce, part 2
A discussion hosted by the CaRCC
Thu May 26, 12p ET/ 11a CT/ 10a MT/ 9a PT/ 6a HT

The second of this two-part conversation will be hosted by CaRCC People Network Track leaders. Assisted by US-RSE call organizers, this call will focus on questions around software and RSEs: promoting better RSE-researcher partnerships, and long-term challenges to software sustainability and support.

Please note these additional community opportunities (in no particular order):

May 11th @ 2 pm EST / 11 am PST, Regulated Research Community of Practice
Researcher Focused Session | Compliance & Researchers: Teamwork makes the dream work.
Karen Bell will share how departments at University of Memphis work together to support research compliance and encourage researchers to meet federal requirements. Jodi Ito will share how researcher focused workshops have resulted in stronger relationships through the entire workflow at University of Hawaii.
