This month, we’d like to bring to your attention a joint set of calls between the US Research Software Engineer Association (US-RSE) and CaRCC. Hosted by each group, the calls give you, the community, an opportunity to discuss topics related to RSEs in the workforce. We hope to see you then and there.

Background and Demonstration of the Open Research Toolkit, an OER for Learning about the Open Research Ecosystem, discussion facilitated by Christopher Eaker

In this presentation, the presenter will describe the reasoning behind the creation of the Open Research Toolkit (ORT), explain the methodology of its creation, and showcase the modules on the Open Science Framework. The presenter hopes for an engaged discussion from the track about the ORT and the modules. Any feedback on the current modules and ideas for future modules particularly from a HPC perspective are welcome as well as collaborators.

The University of Florida (UF) has been building a research computing environment for its faculty and their students and collaborators for a decade. Starting from a very distributed environment, the university has built a research computing infrastructure to serve the needs of the community. This has advantages of scale and consistency, but because of the diversity of needs and requirements, the resulting infrastructure is also complex, albeit more manageable by a small team than the original network of distributed resources. The discussion will address some of the architectural designs and policies and procedures that have been put in place to operate the system. The goal has been to enable the research and teaching mission while maintaining security of the system, the data, and the users.
