People Network Virtual Meetings in April

Mark your calendars for these upcoming People Network virtual meetings. (For handy calendar entries please try the CaRCC Events Calendar.)

Data-Facing Track (first Tuesdays)

Tuesday, April 7th, 1p ET/ 12p CT/ 11a MT/ 10a PT

Data-facing work in XSEDE Extended Collaborative Support Services (ECSS), Sergiu Sanielevici (PSC)

Description: The Extended Collaborative Support Service (ECSS) improves the productivity of the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) user community through collaborations to optimize their applications, their work and data flows, and engages practitioners of disciplines that have not traditionally used advanced cyberinfrastructure (ACI). Novel & Innovative Projects (NIP) has the primary responsibility within ECSS for this latter task. NIP provides mentoring to help projects be successful and advice on the use of technologies such as virtual environments, machine learning, virtualization and containers. INIP is now focused on helping AI and “big data” projects on novel SP resources scheduled to enter production in 2020, including Bridges-2 at PSC and Expanse at SDSC.

Researcher-Facing Track (second Thursdays)

Thursday, April 9th, 1p ET/ 12p CT/ 11a MT/ 10a PT

Sharing Best Practices in Remote User Support & Training: A micro-panel & open community discussion

Description: Like many others, researcher-facing professionals have moved their activities online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this month’s call, join your colleagues in discussing best practices to support our user communities remotely and to engage participants in virtual workshops & trainings.

Note that this will be in a different Zoom room, communicated via email (see bottom of post more details).

Emerging Centers Track (third Wednesdays)

Wednesday, April 15th, 12pm ET/ 11am CT/ 10am MT/ 9am PT/ 7am HT

COVID-19 Impact

Description: This will be an open session for discussion about the impact of COVID-19 on your centers and work in general.  Have you experienced any of the following? COVID-19 resource prioritization, equipment delivery delays, virtual office hours/support, VPN and network issues, virtual training and workshops, hiring freezes, travel freezes, projects/approvals for funding put on hold, student workers leaving campus, working at home with family, others?  How have you handled it? How can we take advantage of this time to make our centers even better when the quarantines are lifted and life resumes to normal?

Systems-Facing Track (third Thursdays)

Thursday, April 16th, 1p ET/ 12p CT/ 11a MT/ 10a PT

Direct to the chip warm water cooling HPC systems at OSC, Douglas Johnson (OSC)

Description: OSC has deployed a direct to the chip warm water cooling system as the primary means of cooling the Pitzer cluster, our latest High Performance Computing (HPC) system. Large scale HPC systems are power and cooling intensive, and the high density of the physical packaging of the systems stress data center design in several dimensions.  A large fraction of the overall power for operating the system goes to cooling the system. Warm water cooling is an approach to support higher physical densities of systems and reduce the amount of power required to cool the systems. This talk will review power and cooling basics, and present our experiences operating the Pitzer cluster for the last 15 months.

All calls will take place in a Zoom room (coordinates communicated via email).

Please sign up for the People Network lists (below) to receive emails with the coordinates, or send an email to help@carcc.org if you can’t find them.

Participants need not subscribe to a particular track to participate in calls. Additional details for track members, including notes documents and any pre-call activities, will be distributed ahead of the call via the email lists and other communication channels within each track.

The CaRCC (Campus Research Computing Consortium) People Network, aims “to foster, build and grow an inclusive community (termed the “People Network”) for campus CI, research computing and data professionals.” If you have received this email NOT via CaRCC’s People Network, and you would like to join the People Network, please fill in the form at http://bit.ly/join_carcc_people_network.
